Garden Seasons

Come visit Woodlands any time of the year to experience each season of the Garden or explore the plants in fall & winter virtually via these facebook albums:  Fall Colors and Winter Wonder

Enjoy a Shinrin Yoku “forest bathing” Walk in the Garden hosted by Renewal by Nature to fully experience winter, and open your senses more fully to the beauty of nature. Walks are currently scheduled for Sunday mornings through January, with a special First Day walk offered on New Year’s Day. Group size is limited to 12 participants, so be sure to register early to save your spot.  In 2016-11/20, 12/4 or In 2017- 1/1, 1/15, 1/29…. More information and registration found here.

How often do you get to come across a garden in full bloom around this time of the year? While most of our plants take a break for the winter, our Camellia garden is at its colorful best now. Take a walk through to see the pretty flowers in a range of reds, pinks and whites.

Our Hellebore blooms are just starting to peep out. The Holly trees are filled with their characteristic red berries, the beech trees are still holding on to their fall colors and our lovely Egdeworthia chrysantha, commonly known as Paperbush, has its cream yellow flowers on display. Earlier this month, we spotted ice ribbons on our Frostweed (images below). The Verbesina virginica, known as Frostweed, Virginia Crownbeard and Iceplant, have dark green leaves and bright white flowers that usually bloom in late summer. However, they have a bloom of a different sort in the winter. The stems let out water that freezes into fascinating shapes to form ribbons of ice in the colder weather.

Be part of our inaugural M.A.Y. Fair!

MAYFair-e1461857324192

Woodlands Garden is getting ready to host its inaugural M.A.Y. (Music, Art, & Youth) Fair on Saturday, May 21 between 11 am and 3 pm to celebrate our community’s young talent.

The Garden’s lawn will be transformed into an artists’ market with over 20 booths, where youth (grades 2-12) will create and sell their own artwork and crafts. In addition to the artists’ market, there will be musical performances to showcase their vocal and instrumental skills with the guitar, ukulele, piano, and cello. These musical performances will be held in the Pavilion and outdoor performance stage in the Children’s Natural Play Area.

“We are very excited for the first M.A.Y. Fair on May 21, a day of musical performances and an artists’ market set in the natural backdrop of Woodlands Garden,” says Kate Baltzell, Executive Director. “This event is an opportunity to showcase the creative talent of the community and engage the next generation in appreciating all that our greenspace has to offer. Great volunteers, supportive sponsors, and bright artists will ensure this event is fun for all ages.”

This event is free to the public and will take place rain or shine. A special thanks to the sponsors of M.A.Y. Fair for their support: Rock with Bock, Emory Alliance Credit Union, 2 Crafty Chicks, Kaleidoscope Studio, Color Wheel, and Revisioned Furniture Company.
