Help Build the Volunteer Workspace

Support the Project

Double your donation: Every contribution to the Volunteer Workspace will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a generous group of Garden Friends. Help us reach our $10,000 goal to unlock $20,000 in impact!

More than 215 volunteers contribute 3,000+ service hours each year to sustain Woodlands Garden’s horticultural operations. Yet the dedicated volunteers who steward our landscape lack a home base. Tools and equipment are stored in the Visitor Center, far from primary planting areas. The Visitor Center functions simultaneously as a welcome space, staff office, and storage facility.

Over the past decade, thanks to the generosity of our community, Woodlands has invested in wayfinding signage and expanded accessibility across the property. As a result, we have welcomed a growing number of visitors, increasing daily use and horticultural demand. Garden infrastructure must also improve to support our growth and maintain the native ecosystem at the highest standard.

To address our operational constraints, Woodlands plans to construct a Volunteer Workspace, which will serve as a hub for horticultural operations and relocate garden equipment to the heart of the landscape. This shift will also free Visitor Center space for conversion into an educational classroom, establishing the foundation needed to support environmental stewardship, expand volunteer participation, and foster hands-on learning. A storage shed will securely house horticultural supplies and vehicles.

An open-air pavilion will provide shaded workspace and seating for volunteers in all weather, from rain to hot Georgia summers.

The Volunteer Workspace will be tucked in the east corner of the Garden, more easily accessible to planting areas, but separated from visitor traffic.

The planned Volunteer Workspace will anchor horticultural operations at the heart of our wooded landscape, optimizing storage and providing a dedicated work area for 3,000+ community members who care for the garden. As the final installment in a decade of capital improvements, it is a lasting investment in Woodlands Garden’s vision of stewardship and connection to the natural world.

Fairies in the Garden

Woodlands is thrilled to partner with Skyland Trail and Hillside Atlanta for the 13th annual ‘Fairies in the Garden’ celebration from October 4 – 18, 2025. This year we will feature fairy homes to explore throughout the garden including sites easily viewed from ADA-accessible paths and hardscaped driveways.

Fairies in the Garden features artistic “fairy” houses, hidden throughout the Garden’s eight-acre forest for young nature-lovers to find. Skyland Trail artists will create intricate tiny houses in the woods, just for you to find. They could be tucked away below an old tree, under a bridge or right along the trails. Discover tiny fairy dwellings built from bark, twigs, branches, seed heads, leaves and other natural materials, tucked in sheltered nooks along the garden’s paths. Colonies will include root fairies, stump fairies, fortress fairies, moss fairies … and of course trolls under the bridge.

How to join in the fairy fun:

Keep magic thriving by:
1. Staying on the path;
2. Look with your eyes only–please don’t touch the fairy homes!

  • Download the Fairy Map (click here)
  • Stroll the trails at Woodlands Garden during the free, 2-week exhibit from October 4-18 and find all the fairy homes on display
