SUMMARY:Birding Lecture Series: How Birds Work\, From Bones to Beak
DESCRIPTION:Birds are almost everywhere\, but have you ever stopped and wondered how they accomplish what they do? How can a bird lift itself into the air\, sing such beautiful songs\, or display such striking colors? This 60-minute talk takes a friendly\, behind-the-scenes look at how birds work. We’ll begin with a brief story of where birds came from\, tracing their surprising origins back to dinosaurs. From\nthere\, we’ll explore the basics of bird bodies in an easy-to-understand way: how lightweight bones and strong muscles make flight possible\, how birds breathe while flying\, and why beaks come in so many shapes and sizes. We’ll also talk about bird feathers\, and their colors. This talk is designed for curious adults with no science background required. Using everyday examples and\nplenty of visuals\, it offers a new way to look at the birds you already know\, thus allowing us to notice them a little more closely the next time we are outside. \nThis talk is free and open to the public. To register\, email annie@woodlandsgarden.org.

SUMMARY:Birding Lecture Series: Visualizing Bird Song\, Seeing What We Hear
DESCRIPTION:Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a morning walk. You may not see many birds\, but you hear them\neverywhere—chirps\, whistles\, trills\, buzzes. For most of us\, birds are first noticed not by sight\, but by sound. Birdsong has fascinated humans for centuries. Long before field guides or binoculars\, people identified birds by their voices. Today\, thanks to technology\, we can go one step further—we can see bird song. This talk is about how we take something fleeting and invisible\, like sound\, and turn it into something we can look at\, study\, and even enjoy as art. \nThis talk is free and open to the public. No registration required.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Foraging Walk
DESCRIPTION:As we gear up for our annual Fall Plant Sale\, we will host two guided plant walks! This free walk will start outside of the Visitors Center\, it does not require registration. The walk will highlight native edible plants that will be for sale at the Plant Sale. We hope to see you there! \nAbout the guide: Cornelia is an enthusiast of the natural world. She has spent the last 10 years studying the plants around her and learning skills that allow her to be in direct relationship with them – foraging\, herbal medicine\, basketry\, natural dyeing\, and folklore. She loves to share this knowledge with others. She also runs a home organizing business – when she’s not outside\, she’s probably inside decluttering someone’s house!
